Well, considering this topic has continued to come up time and time again, and I have been given countless opportunities time and time again to read fellow brothers and sisters ‘opinions’ on the matter; I have realised I am forever finding myself surprised, somewhat shocked and completely intrigued by the amount of ‘sugar coating’ that we as Christians and followers of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ - seem to continuously float over the top of ‘Harry Potter’.. I am regularly taken back by the sweetened, half-hearted responses from those who claim to stand on Gods word, and yet, completely and utterly appear to discount at least five or six scriptures (not inclusive of those relevant but not directly mentioning) the recurring theme of Witchcraft - and it being an abomination to God. It seems to me that it is becoming more and more clear, that we are turning into a generation that picks apart the bible, and moves with what we WANT and what SUITS, rather than what God wants, and His truth.
Now comes the meat of my message; the hearty stuff - lets remember, I am human, and I fall short in sin and temptation often. Let us not be confused in assuming that I am taking the high road in suggesting I am some magnificent and blameless person; because I am indeed; a sinner, in need of Gods grace, like every other human. This being said; lets go!
Now, my response in short to watching Harry Potter, and other films that dabble in the ‘imagination play’ of witchcraft, sorcery etc.. is “No, no and oh, did I mention… NO!?” Regardless of the theory that Harry Potter, sabrina, merlin and charmed are ‘just stories’ or ‘just imagination’ and are all suggesting and playing under the banner of ‘Oh, if you know it’s not real, it’s totally fine to watch, read and invest your time into them’… Oh cool, yes… My answer - In accordance with scripture, is still “NO!”. Truthfully, Gods word should always come before our justification - and by saying things like I have mentioned above - about a movie that is clearly supporting and encouraging an entirely rebellious ‘religion/activity’ of witchcraft and sorcery, that is DETESTABLE to God, we are clearly attempting to justify rebelling against Him and His word… Faithful to God? - apparently not.
“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable way of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord has not permitted you to do so” (Deuteronomy 18:9-14).
You want to know some simple facts and truths about Harry Potter, brothers and sisters? - You don’t? Well you’re welcome to stop reading, however, if you’d like the meat of Gods word on the topic, and the facts behind the fruity topping that people have put onto it; then read on, please…
The spells used within the film are indeed, parts of real spells, in genuine existence, and are used by witches, wiccans etc in the practice of sorcery and witchcraft in todays society. They are not speaking out ‘made up spells’ - and they are not ‘merely entertainment or imagination’ no, they are pieces of REAL spells. Satanism and Wicca are variations of the same thing - people don’t seem to realize this. Satanists will be rubbing their hands together because this series is indeed, a method of recruitment.
In the stories of Harry Potter; The “good” characters practice “white magic”, while the bad characters practice the “Dark Arts”. Readers become fascinated with the magic used (explained in remarkable detail in the films and books)…. Yet God is clear in Scripture that any practice of magic is an “abomination” to him. God doesn’t distinguish between “white” and “dark” magic since they both originate from the same source.
There is no such thing as “Cheap Grace”. Christ died on the cross to forgive us for our sins, yet there is no excuse to take sin lightly… Engaging in any sin including sorcery opens us up to demonic oppression; which we are regularly praying against - in a world where there is a spiritual battle raging; why we as children of God, would want to open up our hearts, bodies and minds to such things entering us; is to this day, beyond me!
“The Lord has rejected you because you welcome foreigners from the East who practice magic and communicate with evil spirits” (Isaiah 2:6).
“Crawl into the caves in the rocks and hide in terror from his glorious majesty, for the day is coming when your proud looks will be brought low; the Lord alone will be exalted. On that day the Lord of Hosts will move against the proud and haughty and bring them to dust… All the glory of mankind will bow low; the pride of men will like in the dust, and the Lord alone will be exalted. And all idols will be utterly abolished and destroyed” (Isaiah 2:10-18).
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:19-21)
Also read scriptures: 2 Samuel 15:23, Psalm 97:10, 2 Thessalonians 2:12, Ephesians 5:11, Isaiah 5:20-21.
How interesting, that children are not merely ‘dreaming of’ or ‘playing make-believe’ when it comes to Harry Potter - No, the Pagan ‘church’ / Federation has actually had to appoint a youth officer simply to cover and to deal with the millions of floods of letters and questions coming in from children as young as 6 years old, requesting things such as “How do I become a wizard like Harry?”, “Are there schools I can go to to practice magic like harry and Hermione?” - NEWS FLASH my friends: There are, and these children as young as 6 - from being opened up to these books, are now seeking, looking and longing to dabble in witchcraft etc and learn the ways of it. Satan is sneaky, crafty and sly in His ways; He no longer waits for us to grow into rebellious teenagers, and to dabble in worldly things; no, He has raised an entire generation on the fascination, excitement and desire for witchcraft and magic. He has candied it with cute characters, fascinating roles, appealing ideas and creative means - in order to appeal to the open, suggestive and mouldable minds of children…
J.K Rowling speaks very clearly and openly about her research, and her part in white and dark magic; and her ‘research’ prior to creating her books. Names such as ‘Hedwig’, ‘Cliodna’, Alberic Grunnion’, ‘Nicolas Flamel’, ‘Paracelsus’, Henry Cornelius Agrippa’ were all famous witches, sorcerers and alchemists.. Also names such as “Azkaban”, “Circe”, “Draco”, “Erised”, “Hermes”, and “Slytherin”; are names of real devils or demons.
These are not characters of fiction! Why package these books as fantasy when they are literally crammed full of REAL black magic ceremonies, REAL hexes and spells, names of REAL witches and demons? Why, if this is truly fantasy, wouldn’t Rowling fill these books with ‘made-up-names’ and ‘made-up-spells’, instead of real curses and names of real witches and demons?
Well, maybe that is something you should think about, next time you go to the library, or the DVD store… Satan doesn’t do things in halves, He takes every foothold He can get, and works His disgusting ways within them.
To finish; If we are to say ‘Harry Potter is just entertainment’ - then we may as well say the same for pornography, R18+ Violent-filled films and going to strip clubs. Gods word speaks out against those areas; just as obviously and clearly as it does about witchcraft… So tell me brothers and sisters, why do we justify one as entertainment, and preach from the highest point using scriptural reference against the others…?
Sure, just like when you watch pornographic films; you’re not engaging in the act itself physically, but you are still enjoying and being entertained by something that is detestable in the eyes of God.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
Finally I leave you with this scripture, and ask you; If this is what Gods word says - then what do you base your opinions, beliefs, boundaries and stance on? Are you conforming, backing down, easing off or simply choosing to ignore His word - Purely because it’s easier to have one less conflict with the interests and loves of those who are in the world? My friends… “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2).
Bless.
Jacinta.
